A Ballyhegan man who was due to appear in court on Wednesday to face sex offence charges has died suddenly.
The body of Martin John Hughes, Annahugh Park, was discovered in the Ballyhegan Road area on Sunday. Police said the death was not believed to be suspicious.
Mr Hughes (65) had been charged with 14 offences, five of them against a child, spanning 1983-1988.
A coroner’s certificate was presented to Newry Crown Court on Wednesday morning, where the case was up for mention. The court ordered that the file be closed unless otherwise directed.
In a previous version of this report we had stated the alleged offences were against children, we wish to make clear the allegations were regarding just one child.
