Man grabbed nephew (13) by the neck

When a disagreement broke out between himself and his nephew a Portadown man grabbed the 13-year-old by the neck, Craigavon Court heard last Wednesday.

Shane Parfitt (32) Donard Park, Portadown, was fined £200, with a £15 offender’s levy, for unlawful assault on June 18 this year.

The court heard that police received a call from a man who said he had assaulted his nephew.

When they arrived they found the defendant smoking in the front garden. The 13-year-old victim was sitting at a kitchen table and was sobbing. There was reddening to his neck and throat.

He claimed Parfitt grabbed him with both his hands and held him down. The defendant admitted this.

A defence solicitor said he had paid a visit to the home of his sister who was the mother of the injured party. They lived just a short distance away from the defendant.

He explained there was a verbal altercation between the defendant and the injured party about a lack of respect for his uncle. This led to pushing and shoving and Parfitt grabbed the boy but it was only for a matter of seconds. The solicitor said it was the defendant who had phoned for police.

District Judge Peter King said there was a domestic background and it was regrettable this ended up in court but Parfitt crossed the line.
