Man made reference to girlfriend's private parts in assault case

Aaron Peter Chambers (36), an unemployed bricklayer whose address was given as the Croydon area of London but who is originally from Ballymoney, struggled with police and had to be restrained on the ground as he was arrested in Portstewart on January 8 this year, a court was told.

Chambers appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court last Monday.

He admitted charges of assaulting his then girlfriend; disorderly behaviour and resisting a police officer in the execution of his duty.

A prosecutor said police received a 999 call from the injured party at 8pm on January 8 saying Chambers was in her home and was refusing to leave.

She said he was drunk and she was in fear of the defendant when he said: “I’m here for a month, I’m going nowhere. You don’t call the shots, I could smash your skull off that bath and scar you for life”.

The prosecutor told the court that Chambers also showed pictures to the woman’s neighbours making reference to her private parts as he described her a “drama queen”.

The hearing was told that when police arrived he was verbally abusive to them and told the woman: “They can only hold me for 24 hours. I will get you” and he had to be restrained on the ground by police.

A defence solicitor for Chambers said that he was “extremely drunk” and accepted responsibility for his actions but said there was no violence.

The solicitor said the incidents came at the end of a long term relationship.

Chambers was given four months in jail, suspended for two years, and also has to pay compensation of £250 to the woman.
