The day after he was released from prison a 54-year-old man was caught trying to steal two bottles of brandy from Asda in Portadown.

Jonas Posiunas, Mill Street, Gilford, appeared in the dock last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He was sentenced to two months in prison for theft and given a one-month concurrent term for going equipped to theft with a foil lined bag on December 13.

The court heard he was stopped while leaving Asda without paying for two bottles of brandy valued at £68. He had placed them in a satchel.

A solicitor representing the defendant said he had resorted to theft to get some money.

District Judge, Mr Peter King, said that disposal was so obvious he could do without a pre-sentence report.

He explained that the defendant had been sentenced to two months in prison at Dungannon court in November and released on December 12.

Less that 24 hours later, said Judge King, he re-offended in the same way and he was currently serving a sentence for other offences.
