Mayor to send letter of thanks to Loughgiel and Council

BALLYMONEY Mayor has agreed to send a letter of thank to Loughgiel Community Association and Council staff.

During a recent Health and Environmental Services Committee meeting, members heard that the letter was in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the successful operation of the Humanitarian Assistance Centre at Loughgiel during the severe weather condition in April.

Following the news a discussion ensued on the rationale for the use of Loughgiel Millennium Centre and the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre as humanitarian assistance centres based on the facilities available at those outlets.

Members concurred that communication with members of the community is a key issue in promoting the use of the centres in times of such need.

The Mayor advised that it was his intention to host a reception for those who had been involved.

It was proposed by Alderman Cecil Cousley, seconded by Alderman Harry Connolly to send a letter of thanks to Loughgiel Community Association recognising their outstanding contribution to the successful operation of the Humanitarian Assistance Centre during April 1 to 4 and also to the Council staff who contribution to the operation.

Speaking during last Monday’’s Full Council meeting, members once again praised those involved.

However Cllr John Finlay said: “There was a lot of good work done during this time, but some people still thought they were neglected.

“I was speaking to a resident from the Killyrammer area who had no electricity and didn’t even know that the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre was even open.

“Another lady from the Loughgiel area was left trapped and not helped.

“I think we should take a note of these addresses so if something like this happens again we know which areas to keep an eye on.”

Alderman Harry Connolly agreed stating: Everyone involved did their best. NIE carried out work in four days which would have taken two weeks.”

Concluding Alderman Frank Campbell added: “All the stops were pulled out by everyone involved. However we do need to learn for this and we will learn.”
