Two local mums who give unstinting care to their disabled children have been selected as finalists in the SuperValu SuperMums competition.
Kerry Hawkins from Portadown (Supervalu Lurgan finalist) and Cathy Laverty from Tandragee (SuperValu Tandragee finalist) are among 35 mums chosen from across Northern Ireland.
Kerry was selected for being a mum with a strong sense of determination and positive attitude. She cares for her youngest child Ben who has complex medical needs and requires 24-hour care as well as balancing the demands of being a busy mum-of-three
Cathy Laverty was nominated for her positive outlook and dedication to her children including her eldest daughter Katie who has a very rare chromosome condition which has resulted in her not being able to walk or talk.
Cathy balances the care of all of her children with hospital appointments and operating her own travel business.
They will be recognised at a ceremony at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, on September 28, hosted by TV personality Claire McCollum.

Kate Ferguson, SuperValu communications manager, said, “The SuperValu SuperMums competition has proven to be as popular as ever, and now in its third year the standard of entries continues to grow.
“With so many wonderful nominations from proud family and friends, it really does highlight how many mums there are across Northern Ireland who go that extra mile for their loved ones and take life’s day-to-day challenges in their stride.
“I’d like to congratulate both Kerry and Cathy on being chosen as SuperValu SuperMum finalists and wish them all the best for the grand final.”
TV personality and mum of two Claire McCollum said, “The judging process doesn’t get any easier, as it’s so humbling to read about all of the wonderful mums who were nominated. The final is always such a lovely evening and I am thrilled to be able to meet all of the finalists and recognise them on the night.”
The competition, sponsored by Magnum and Robinsons, was launched on Mother’s Day and received more than 300 nominations.
