A new Action Cancer fundraising group has been set up in Markethill to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

The group of volunteers will be placing collection boxes and organising events and general fundraising in Markethill, Hamiltonsbawn and surrounding areas.

All the money raised will go directly to Action Cancer’s range of lifesaving and support services.

Group chairperson Aubrene Willis has been volunteering for Action Cancer for more than 40 years and it is a cause very close to her heart.

She said, “I am delighted to be leading this group which is made up of both old and new friends. We have lots of fundraising planned for the coming months and are already delighted at the amount of support received from the local community.

“I feel it is important to stress that all the money raised will be used to fund entirely local services and we look forward to bringing those services to Markethill when the Action Cancer Big Bus visits in October.”

For the group’s first venture they are asking as many local businesses as possible to Paint The Town Pink in October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They have already provided 46 participants with a box of fundraising materials including pink balloons, bunting, collection boxes, Johnsons Coffee and ideas on how to raise some money. They will also be holding a ladies’ shooting event in November.

The Action Cancer Big Bus will visit 5 Main Street, Coolmillish, Markethill, on Friday, October 23. Appointments are available for breast screenings and health checks and can be booked by phone on 9080 3344 or online
