New second-hand book shop needs volunteers

The international aid and development charity plans to open the store on Ferryquay Street in mid-March.

It says it needs more than 25 local volunteers to help run it and is asking anyone with time to get in touch.

Nyree Tubritt, Concern’s Retail Development Manager, said: “If you are a bookworm, then it will be the ideal place to spend a few hours selling and sorting books.

“And what’s more, you will be helping to make a difference to the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

“We’re recruiting people - students, pensioners, anyone really, who can dedicate a morning or afternoon each week to help.

“Like our other two shops, it will be staffed entirely by volunteers.

“Concern has had a strong and dedicated support group in Derry since 1989 - organising street collections and events.”

This is Concern’s first shop to open in more than twenty years, and its first ever second-hand bookstore to be launched.

It already has two charity shops in Newcastle and Ballycastle which have raised more than £2 million for the humanitarian agency since opening.

Ms Tubritt has high hopes for the new Londonderry store and knows the local public will support it.

She said: “We hope to draw on their goodwill and that of the wider community in the city to help support us.”
