NI Fire Service LIFE graduates pass out in style

The five-day intensive programme, which stands for Local Intervention Fire Education, saw 12 students getting to  grips with an experience like no other - completing a short course similar to that of trainee firefighters.

The NIFRS held a presentation for the latest LIFE scheme graduates at Northland Fire Station on Friday past, January 29.

The scheme was jointly funded by the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), and the aim of it is to create a better understanding for local young people of the roles and responsibilities of firefighters in their community.

The scheme is targeted at young people aged between 13 and 17 and seeks to develop skills such as team work, personal responsibility, leadership skills and confidence.

Participating undergo a five day programme of physical activity and core skills before graduating at the end of the week.

Speaking at Friday’s graduation ceremony, NIFRS Western Area Station Commander Kieran Doherty said: “It is very rewarding to see our graduates complete the LIFE Scheme at Northland Fire Station.

“The five-day course tests both physical and mental strength as participants develop a better understanding of Firefighters working with their communities, as well as learning life skills.

“A better understanding of the positive role of firefighters within the community enables firefighters to carry out their duties when attending incidents with a risk to life and property.

“I would like to thank Derry and Strabane PCSP for their involvement and thank both the students and instructors involved in making this another successful LIFE scheme.”
