Operation ‘Season’s Greetings’ launched

AS the festive season approaches, police in Lisburn, supported by Lisburn District Policing Partnership, are launching their operation ‘Season’s Greetings’.

‘Season’s Greetings’ will focus on three key priorities this Christmas – keeping people safe in their homes, keeping people safe on the roads and keeping people safe when out socialising.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Darrin Jones explained: “Crime in Lisburn during the festive season has fallen consistently over recent years and this year we are seeking to reduce the number of crimes even further.

“Local officers will be deployed in high visibility patrols at times and in the areas that they are needed most. These patrols will be supported by a number of community safety and crime prevention initiatives aimed at giving the best seasonal information and advice to householders, shoppers, revellers and motorists.

The much loved local character ‘Willie Nickit’ will be used to promote essential home and vehicle security for residents. Billboards and other promotional material will outline simple steps people can take to significantly reduce their chances of falling victim to a burglar.”

Councillor Margaret Tolerton, Chairman of Lisburn DPP, said: “Giving gifts at Christmas time is a popular tradition, and to ensure that all presents reach those they were purchased for, Lisburn DPP would encourage residents to be extra vigilant and secure all property.

“In the current economic climate everyone is working hard to ensure they have a good Christmas and criminals must not be allowed to spoil the festive season. Through the Willie Nickit campaign residents are provided with advice on safety; and there will be advice stands throughout the Lisburn area reinforcing the campaign.”

Area Commander Chief Inspector Darrin Jones added: “Operation Season’s Greetings will also incorporate the PSNI’s annual winter drink drive operation. The message here is simple - just one drink can kill. Your judgement can be impaired by just one pint of beer or one glass of wine so why risk it? The police understand people wanting to enjoy a Christmas drink with friends and family, all they ask is that you leave the car at home.

“It is also important to plan ahead when heading out for the night. To ensure you stay safe police would always advise drinking sensibly and planning how you will get home in advance. If you are out in a group, stick with your friends. Try to look out for any friends who may have had too much to drink or who may be vulnerable if they become separated from the group. “Unfortunately at times overindulgence in alcohol has also led to foolish and unnecessary fights. With just one punch, lives have been destroyed and families’ lives have been wrecked. How would you feel if you killed someone? It’s a thought worth bearing in mind before raising your fist.

Councillor Tolerton concluded: “The Lisburn DPP is fully supportive of the PSNI’s Operation Season’s Greetings. It’s key that people know how to protect themselves from crime and harm and that they know police are working to keep them safe this Christmas.”

“Season’s Greetings focuses on all the elements that come together to make the perfect festive season - safety in the home, on the roads and when out and about. This truly is a wonderful time of the year and we want people to enjoy it, stay safe and make this Christmas our best ever.”
