A pensioner attacked and beaten during a burglary at his home earlier this year has died.
Eugene Carr (73) was attacked in Bessbrook at the end of August.
He died at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Tuesday night.
Police said three men broke into the house and went into the bedroom where the pensioner was in bed.
They stabbed him and beat him before stealing cash.
Mr Carr was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he died on Tuesday.
Chief Inspector Lee McNevison said Mr Carr had been the victim of an “horrendous attack whilst he was in his bed at his home”.
A 25-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man arrested in the Newry area on September 4 in relation to the attack were later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said, “I said at the time that this was a despicable act in which a gang targeted an elderly, disabled man and stabbed and beat him in his own bed. I am saddened to learn that Mr Carr has now died and that the police believe his death was caused by his injuries.
“I know the local community was horrified at the attack and has been fully supportive of the Police investigation, but I would appeal to anyone out there who has any information that can help the PSNI, but who has not yet come forward, to please contact the police immediately.”
