A spokesperson for the local authority took to social media this afternoon to appeal to members of the public.

The spokesperson said: “You should not be travelling to Blackhead Path or any other coastal area at this time.

“We’ve had reports from the contractor that walkers have been spotted around the area which we must remind people is still a construction site.

“When the weather is good we often want to get away to our favourite beauty spot, but this year we are urging everyone in Mid and East Antrim – stay safe by staying at home.

“Our colleagues in the PSNI are stepping up patrols and can issue fines to those flouting the current restrictions. Please help us protect our NHS by staying at home.”

Meanwhile, a councillor for the Knockagh DEA has hit out after groups of people have been congregating in the area.

Independent representative, Cllr Bobby Hadden, said: “I have been advised by council officers that people are still congregating at Knockagh to meet up and drink in the evenings. This is happening despite signage in place and the very clear message to stay at home.

“The car park has now been closed off, but even with increased patrols by the PSNI this does not seem to be enough of a deterrent. These people need to wise up.”
