‘Parents will vote with their feet’ warns local teacher

An Ulster Unionist Councillor and local teacher has expressed her disgust at a move to close the Lurgan campus of Craigavon Senior High School and bus children instead to Portadown.

Councillor Louise McKinstry has warned parents could ‘vote with their feet’ and send their children elsewhere..

She expressed her concern over an EA consultation report which has flown in the face of the majority of parents’ wishes with a plan to bus children to Portadown put forward.

Cllr McKinstry said: “This move would have a detrimental impact on Lurgan, not just because of the loss of an 
educational pathway for half of our controlled sector pupils.

“I believe parents will vote with their feet and seek places for their pupils at 11 in schools in neighbouring towns.

“Both Dromore High and Banbridge Academy have development proposals in to increase their year 8 intakes, so I am especially worried by the content of this report.”
