Call on McCrea to vacate his seat

ULSTER Unionist councillors on Lisburn City Council have called on Basil McCrea to give up his assembly seat in the wake of his resignation from the party.

In a statement they said: “The Ulster Unionist Party Councillors group on Lisburn City Council wishes to express its disappointment at the resignation of the Lagan Valley MLA, Basil McCrea, from the Ulster Unionist Party.

“As Councillors, we totally reject Mr McCrea’s stated reasons for leaving the Party. We believe that he should resign his MLA seat. He was elected as an Ulster Unionist and not under any other guise.

“Should Basil McCrea fail to do this, the Ulster Unionist Party is absolutely determined to retain our existing Lagan Valley Constituency seat and increase the numbers of Ulster Unionists returned to the Assembly at the next election in 2015. We have already begun to make plans to achieve that. The Ulster Unionist Party is totally committed to serving the people of Lagan Valley.”
