Mrs Kelly said: “Victims and survivors have been pushed from pillar to post for years during their reasonable campaign for recognition and compensation for the injuries they sustained during the Troubles. Earlier this year, they thought there was light at the end of this very long tunnel when an announcement was made about the Victims Payment Scheme but we are yet to finalise the process.

“I understand there are ongoing discussions about how the scheme will be financed, although we are clear that this should be funded by Westminster. What’s important is that this scheme is given a dedicated budget line so that when the resource is made available, it can be put to use immediately to meet the needs of victims and survivors.

“I have spoken with the Victims’ Commissioner this week about our concerns around the delay and our continued disappointment that there has not been an accommodation for the bereaved. I have submitted questions to the First Ministers asking for an update on this situation. Victims and Survivors should not be forced to wait any longer.”
