Poppy Appeal launched for 2011

To mark the Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary year, the Legion has launched its Poppy Appeal under the slogan ‘Standing shoulder to shoulder with all who serve’.

In keeping with past tradition the Waterside and Londonderry Branches of the Royal British Legion have again presented the Mayor of Londonderry, Alderman Maurice Devenney, with the first Poppy to symbolise the official launch of the 2011 Poppy Appeal.

“In a change to the usual launch format, this time round the poppy team took a back seat and are delighted to have had the honour of the young people from the City performing the presentation of the first the Mayor with the first official Poppy for 2011,” said Poppy Appeal co-ordinator, Terence McKeegan.

“The annual Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s major fundraising campaign and the aim this year is to surpass last years total, and raise £40 million pounds,” Mr McKeegan said.

“This fundraising work will allow the Legion to continue the organisation’s vital work that means so much to the thousands of serving and ex-service men and women and their families who avail of the services that the charity provides each year,” said Mr McKeegan.

The Royal British Legion helps people of all ages by providing financial, social and emotional help to those who need it. Last year Waterside RBL raised £24,300, and the co-ordinators have thanked the public for their support.
