Principal praises young performers

Principal George McCluskey said was delighted with the achievement of the young singers at the annual event.

He added: “Many congratulations to the boys and girls of our school choir who successfully competed and won in the two main primary school choir sections at Carrickfergus Festival on Thursday 8th May 2014. They received first place in the two part and own choice class and first in the other section of set piece and own choice within the competition.

“Our choir also scooped the ‘Lowry Trophy’ as the most accomplished Primary choir of the Festival. Our sincere thanks go to Miss Hill and Mrs Moore for their thorough preparation of the choir, Mrs Bennett for accompanying the choir and to our parents and other Oakfield staff for their support throughout rehearsals.”

Congratulations were also extended to the newly formed musical groups and soloists who enjoyed success at festival

“Second place for Anna Davis in the P5 recorder solo section with third place for Poppy Walker in the same section. Amy Bell achieved second place while Katie McCrea achieved first place in the P6 recorder solo section.

“William Gordon received a second place in the P7 recorder solo section. Yasin Difallah well deserved his first place winning the string class with an excellent cello solo. Our brass ensemble scooped first prize and our wodwind ensemble third prize. In verse speaking, Poppy Walker attained first place in the P5 class.

“Again our sincere thanks go to Mrs E. Rodgers (NEELB woodwind tutor), Miss C. O’Hara (NEELB string tutor), Mrs Moore and Mrs McComb for their valued preparation but special thanks go to Miss Hill for her valued co-ordination and preparation of our musicians,” added Mr McCluskey.

The festival ran earlier this month at several venues in the town with other local participants enjoying success too.
