£500k savings from food waste recycling in MEA borough

The local authority is keen to encourage residents to embrace recycling as a more “environmentally friendly and cost effective” option, rather than sending waste straight to landfill.

Over 12,300 tonnes of waste was processed through brown bins last year.

And the council is now offering free compostable liners for waste food caddies, distributed to all residents across Mid and East Antrim, three times annually.

As the new approach is implemented across the borough, promotional materials will be distributed to householders over the coming months.

A spokesperson for MEA Council said: “Moving forward, council will focus on promoting responsible use of caddy liners and will target distribution to householders who use their brown bins.

“The idea behind providing these packs of caddy liners is to promote recycling amongst householders.

“This will help council to meet recycling targets and protect the environment.

“Many householders find caddy liners a convenient way of transferring food waste to their brown bin.

“Council would underline that householders can also put food waste into their brown bins either loosely or wrapped in newspaper.”
