Pupils take to the catwalk for Hill Croft fundraiser

STAFF and pupils of Hill Croft School hit the catwalk for a very special fashion show at Corr's Corner Hotel on Saturday, March 27.

The event was the last in a series of big fundraising events aimed at collecting money for the school’s ambitious 170,000 adventure play trail project.

This week a delighted Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Chairperson, Sonya Hall, confirmed that all the funding is now in place, and work on the new outdoor play facilities at the New Mossley special school should be complete by May.

On the afternoon of Saturday March 27, more than 200 people watched on as pupils, staff, family and friends dressed in clothes from Dunnes Stores, Abbeycentre and Joli, Ballyclare paraded down the catwalk in aid of the project.

Hailing the event a great success, school Principal Barbara McAuley said: “This event would not have been so successful if it had not been for sponsorship from local businesses and connections from within school, unfortunately too many to mention. I wish to thank all of them and those who provided their expertise on the day also. The end is now in sight for the completion of the play trail.”

Expressing her gratitude to everyone who has helped bring the PTA’s play trail idea to fruition over the past couple of years, Mrs McAuley added: “If it wasn’t for the generosity of local businesses, friends and families connected with the school and the hard work of the PTA and staff, this project would not have got off the ground. The first phase was opened in June 2009. It provides a sensory walkway, wheelchair swing, embankment slide, aerial runway and gazebo. The next phase is the creation of a multi-sports enclosed court.

“This provision will develop knowledge, understanding and skills, enabling pupils to participate fully. It will also be an experience of fun, enjoyment and achievement through a variety of progressively challenging and innovative activities.”

Echoing the Principal’s remarks, Sonya Hall added: “This was our last big fundraising effort and we would just like to thank all the staff, parents and members of the local community who have helped to raise the money needed to build the play trail. It will be a fantastic addition to the facilities at the school.”

The new adventure play trail, which will benefit the school’s 85 pupils, many of whom have severe learning difficulties, is expected to be officially opened in June.
