Red Squirrel event scheduled for Prehen

RED Squirrel Week will be celebrated in Londonderry at the weekend alongside the designation of Prehen Wood as a Local Nature Reserve.

Derry City Council and the Woodland Trust are inviting people to go Red Squirrel spotting at Prehen Wood this Saturday, October 2 at 2pm.

Christine Doherty, Derry City Council's Biodiversity Officer, explained: "Prehen Wood, situated off the Victoria Road, has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve, for its biodiversity value, links to the community, accessibility and potential for education. This semi-natural ancient woodland has a wide range of trees, plants, birds and animals.

"This event provides a fantastic opportunity to get outside, have fun in our local woodland and to find out more about one of our favourite endangered species."

Damien Martin, Chairperson of Prehen Historical and Environmental Society, stated: "We are delighted that after many years of hard work to conserve the woodland and its species, that Prehen Wood has been recognised as an important habitat for a range of protected species and has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve."

Gregor Fulton, site manager with the Woodland Trust, added: "Prehen Wood is a wonderful natural resource, rich in wildlife and prized by local people. We are delighted that the woodland has received such recognition. It's the perfect opportunity to discover the beauty of Prehen and to find out more about its special wild inhabitants."

There will be a host of free activities, to include a guided red squirrel nature trail by the Woodland Trust and a range of squirrel inspired activities.

Graham, the contractor for the "Peace Bridge," created red squirrel feeders from recycled wood materials and will install them in the woodland. Why not come along and help install the red squirrel feeders and the opportunity to feed red squirrels?

Jacqueline Gibson, Graham's Sustainability Co-ordinator, said, 'Graham's is pleased to support Derry City Council's initiative, to enhance urban wildlife spaces, as part of Graham's ongoing commitment to the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity'.

This event is part of the "Do One Thing" project, funded by Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Derry City Council and Graham. Follow directional signage to Prehen House and Prehen Wood. Please dress appropriately for the weather, by wearing suitable footwear and warm waterproof clothing.
