Safety screen for shopping centre

A PLASMA screen has been installed in the Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre in a bid to highlight the issues and problems affecting community safety and to promote campaigns addressing them.

The District Policing Partnership for the Derry City Council area is one of ten partnerships that have been selected by the Northern Ireland Policing Board to benefit from the installation of multi-media plasma screens.

A range of public advertisements developed by the Public Health Agency, Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Department of Justice, Crimestoppers, District Policing Partnership and Community Safety Partnership will be played on the screen continuously.

It is hoped that the screen will increase public awareness about a number of personal and community safety initiatives, as well as informing people about the advice, support and help that is available for minority groups, vulnerable members of society and victims of crime. In addition to the screen a variety of informative literature will be on display that members of the public can take home.

Information will be on hand regarding the City Community Safety Warden Scheme, Neighbourhood Watch, the District Policing Partnership and Local Policing Plan. Advice about home safety, protecting your valuables and home safety packs will also be available for anyone interested.

Chairperson of the District Policing Partnership, Alderman Joe Miller praised the initiative saying, “This screen is a wonderful way to engage with the public about a wide number of issues that affect us all. There is lots of relevant and important information here for everyone from young people to the elderly, parents and minority groups. A safe and inclusive community is what we are all working towards and initiatives such as this get people talking about these issues and help to create a sense of greater community spirit.”

He continued “Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre is a great venue to host the screen, it’s where neighbours, friends and family meet up on a regular basis and hopefully it will be a talking point with the many visitors it attracts. I would like to thank the management and staff for all their help and support. I would encourage people to take the time to watch some of the adverts or read the literature when passing by.”

The screen will be at the Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre until the end of August.
