Scheme to help people into employment

A new programme to help people into employment has begun in the Portadown area.

The Work IT programme will be offering 48 weeks of subsidised employment along with an accredited qualification to 160 people over 32 months.

Although it is focusing on 16 and 17-year-olds primarily, it is open to all ages aged 16 years and over if eligibility criteria is met.

The programme is being delivered by Network Personnel, which is based in the offices of ABC Community Network, Portadown, and is funded by the Social Investment Fund on behalf of Newry, Mourne & Down District Council.

It is designed to help people from Portadown, Lurgan, Coalisland and Newry with the focus being on the most deprived areas.

Laura McElhone, employment and training officer with Network Personnel, explained that the organisation works closely with people to see which areas of employment they are interested in, and then organises a placement for them.

She added, “We are confident this programme will offer much needed support to unemployed people of the area.

“This will also be a boost to employers as employment will be subsidised for 48 weeks.”

Anyone interested should contact Laura McElhone on 3839 2777 or call into the ABC Community Network office at 22 Church Street and pick up an application form.
