Sex offender on the run after failing to return to Magilligan prison

A 29-year-old sex offender has been declared as ‘unlawfully at large’ after failing to return from home leave to Magilligan Prison.

John Patrick Smyth has been UAL since September 14.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service has released a picture of Smyth and details of his criminal record.

His criminal record, according to the Northern Ireland Prison Service website include “gross indecency with or towards a child, rape, aggravated assault and being armed with offensive weapon with intent to commit offence”.

He is also described as being a drug user.

They describe him as being 1.7 metres tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.

They say that if anyone sees someone matching his description they should call their nearest police station or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
