Several thousand pounds were raised for charity with St Mark’s Church of Ireland filled to overflowing on Friday night for the annual carol event, where Fr Martin O’Hagan of ‘The Priests’ was the special guest.
As ever, Portadown Ladies’ and Male Voice Choirs (conductor Gordon Speers) combined to sing a wide selection of carols, with Fr O’Hagan adding his fine tenor voice to items ranging from Handel’s Messiah and Ave Maria to pure entertainment.
The accompanist for the evening was Richard Campbell, former organist at St Mark’s and now with St John’s, Malone Road. He performed his usual solo items.
The charities to benefit are Macmillan Cancer Support and Action Duchenne (Muscular Dystrophy).
The cheques will be presented within the next few weeks and it means that the concert series has raised well over £120,000 for a wide range of good causes.
Gordon Speers said, “We are still assessing the amount raised, but it should be around the five-figure mark. It was one best of our St Mark’s events ever, and the feedback from the audience was excellent.”
