Teenager trapped in car after crashing into fast-flowing Tyrone river

It is understood a farmer using a sling and digger helped firefighters by lifting the car from the water.

After being rescued the young man was taken by ambulance to hospital.

Although his condition is unclear, police say his injuries are not believed to life threatening.

The PSNI said the one vehicle crash took place shortly before 7.50pm on Tuesday [February 23].

“Police received a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision on the Rehaghy Road, Aughnacloy.

“The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries,” a spokesperson said.

Four fire crews were called in to help free the young man from his car, and the river.

A Northern Ireland & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 7.43pm to a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision at the Rehaghy Road, Aughnacloy area of Dungannon.

“Two fire appliances from Dungannon Fire Station and two fire appliances from Crescent Link Fire Station were deployed to the scene.

“An 18-year-old man was rescued from a vehicle trapped in a river in the area. The vehicle had been removed from the area by local farmers. The male was taken to a nearby hospital following the incident.

“Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service finished at the scene at 8.29pm.”
