Translink makes plans to refurbish train station

The transport company has appointed a team to assess the railway station, before plans can be developed further.

A spokesperson for Translink detailed the progress being made thus far.

“Translink has appointed a design team to undertake a feasibility study and develop options to refurbish Lurgan railway station,” they said. “On completion of the Feasibility stage, a Business Case will be developed - outlining the costs and benefits.”

SDLP Deputy Leader Dolores Kelly welcomed the appointment of a design team, “This is a very important and welcome first step towards achieving a station in Lurgan that is fit for purpose and reflective of the importance of rail transport to my constituents.

“The design team will conduct a feasibility study and report back with options to improve facilities at the station, which is in desperate need of upgrading. Any potential for this project is, of course, dependent on securing funding.”

Sinn Féin Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Catherine Seeley, commented, “Any new proposals for the station must be future proofed and tied into the economic development of the town and wider area. The plan must also take on board the views and experiences of local residents and traders. We will also continue to press Translink to include in the feasibility study a proposed rail stop in central Craigavon, and to consider other factors to ease traffic congestion in Lurgan and enhance economic activity across the area.”

Speaking on the issue Stephen Moutray MLA said, “I highlighted this a number of weeks ago in the press about the lack of investment in our railway station and the fact that Lurgan is a poor cousin in comparison to Banbridge and Portadown. It is somewhat encouraging to see a design team being appointed and I will be closely monitoring this situation and calling on Minister Danny Kennedy to act and not only design a concept but deliver a new, modern more fit for purpose station in William Street.”

A Translink spokesperson highlighted that plans were still in the early stages: “There is currently no capital funding allocated for the project, however its priority will be considered as part of the next Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) process.”
