Posters have been put up in several areas, including Cloughfern and Glengormley.

“We at UKIP believe we are better off out of Europe,” the Rathcoole man said. “We need to be able to pick our own trade, control our borders, protect our people and national security. The UK needs to be able to create its own laws as up to 75 per cent is controlled by Brussels.”

He added: “The British taxpayer is paying £55 million a day in to the EU and the Northern Ireland taxpayer is paying £1.8/£2.2 million a day. This money could be used to improve our roads, street lights, footpaths, health service and other facilities in north Belfast. It could also be used for local businesses, education and other important issues.”

Mr Boyle has called on all the other Northern Ireland parties to clarify their position on the issue of the UK’s future membership of the European Union.
