Six penalty points were imposed on a learner driver last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without insurance.

Stinga Sorin Ioan Popa (38), James Street, Portadown, was also fined £125 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

As well he was fined £25 for driving without a supervisor.

The court heard police stopped him in Bridge Street, Portadown, and there were ‘L’ plates displayed on the vehicle.

The defendant produced a provisional licence and said the front seat passenger was his cousin.

Police inquiries revealed the passenger was not who the defendant said he was.

Mr Joe McDonald, representing the defendant, said the vehicle belonged to Popa but was insured in his cousin’s name. The defendant was a named driver on the policy but he needed a qualified driver with him.

He explained that on the day in question another cousin of the defendant had arrived in the country.

Mr McDonald added that the other cousin was in bed and Popa decided to drive his visitor into the town.
