'We want answers on Kieran's death' - grieving fiancee

THE heartbroken fiancée of a Limavady man who died at a Kilrea go-kart track is hoping to hear answers about the circumstances surrounding his tragic death.

"Kieran went for a fun day out and ended up dead. The only question I and his family have is, how did this happen?" Linda Mullan said.

Kieran McDonald, a devoted dad-of-three, died during a day out with work colleagues at Go Prokart in Kilrea on July 10.

"I wish he'd never went that day, but I couldn't have stopped him,” said Linda.

“He was so excited about going because he had never been go karting before.

"He left the house at about 20 past 10 and the last thing I said to him was 'enjoy your day'."

Within hours, as Linda was in town shopping, she received the terrible news.

"It was awful. I just came in and hugged Owen, my eldest, I was nearly sick."

Linda and Kieran met as friends in high school in Limavady and had been together for a decade.

She said Kieran, who always took pride in his appearance and was generally quiet fella who didn't go out much, was a devoted dad who lived for his family.

"I knew nobody like Kieran. There were wee things about Kieran that made him him, like he never drank tea.

“He never put salt on his food because he said he never liked salt, just wee things like that," she said.

On Saturday past, Linda made the harrowing trip to the facility to lay flowers.

"I wrote on the card 'In Loving Memory of a devoted daddy and loving fianc. Love you always, My Babe'. I still can't believe it. I still think he's coming back," she said.

In a statement, GoProkart said: "At GoProkart we take safety extremely seriously.

“It is our highest priority and is reflected in our track design, go-karts, our marshalling and our trained first aiders.

“We are shocked and saddened that despite our best efforts, this tragic accident has occurred.

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with Kieran's family at this time. We will await the outcome of the Health and Safety investigation before we comment further."

Kieran Doherty, Director of Environmental Health at Coleraine Borough Council, said Council, in partnership with the PSNI and Forensic Science Northern Ireland, is continuing with its investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.

"Coleraine Borough Council has been notified of the fatality and is investigating this accident under the Health and Safety at work (NI) Order 1978 to try and establish its cause and ensure a reoccurrence is prevented."

A Council spokesperson, added: "A Health and Safety at Work Prohibition notice was served by a council Health and Safety officer instructing the proprietors that the track was to remain closed until all karts on the premises were inspected by an independent registered body.

“This was conducted on the 14th and 15th July, subsequent documentation was then made available to council asserting the safety of all the karts.

“The prohibition notice was removed on Friday 16th July and the proprietors were free to resume business.

“The kart that was involved in the accident remains with Coleraine Borough Council. We are unable to make any further comment due to the current investigation."
