Weight restriction welcomed

The Hillsborough Strategy Group has welcomed news that the Roads Minister is considering the introduction of weight restrictions for vehicles in the village.

Spokesperson for the Group, Nessa O’Callaghan said: “For decades Hillsborough has battled against unparalleled development that has seriously impacted on the lives of residents, traders and the infrastructure of the Conservation Area.

“The introduction of the flyover has made the village the bypass to the A1.

“Road hauliers are rumbling through our three main streets 24 hours a day, disturbing sleep and making it impossible for residents to enjoy the amenity of the front rooms of their homes. The houses do not have solid foundations so vibration caused by HGVs is causing erosion.

“Hillsborough was built for the horse and cart and not for HGVs which mount our pavements while turning corners.

“We are grateful to our MP Jeffrey Donaldson for faithfully supporting us, but special thanks must go to our MLA Brenda Hale who, since entering the N I Assembly has lobbied relentlessly for this weight restriction which we hope will soon become a reality.”
