What does recycling mean to young people of Lisburn?

LOCAL charity, Voluntary Service Lisburn has challenged primary and secondary schools in the greater Lisburn area with designing a statue that represents what 'recycle and reuse' means to them.

The winning entry for both the primary and secondary competitions, which be be announced on January 7 next year, will be brought to life in a one off design by wood sculptor, James Stewart. James has previously made headlines across Northern Ireland for his unusual technique which involves creating sculptures through the use of a chainsaw. The sculpture, which will be created using only recycled wood, will be presented to the school by Voluntary Service Lisburn.

VSL Chief Executive, Pamela Neill said: "We are constantly working to increase the amount of furniture which we as a society recycle. We want to reduce the amount of good quality second hand furnishings which end up in landfill sites across the province each year, simply as a result of going out of fashion. Through refurbishment we update these items, bringing them in line with modern trends and making them once again desirable for the fashion conscious shopper."

She continued: "We are passionate about recycling and the positive effects it will have on future generations. That is why we felt it was perfect to give the local children a chance to get involved and show us what recycling means to them. I personally, am very excited to see what creative ideas they come up with."

Voluntary Service Lisburn has been operating since 1981 and for the past two years has been running a furniture recycling and refurbishment scheme.

On the scheme the long term unemployed and others are trained in the cleaning, restoration and refurbishment of second hand furniture. The 'new-look' furniture is then sold at a reasonable price at VSL Interiors in Haslems Lane, Lisburn or online at vslisburn.com.

The competition will open for entries on Wednesday December 8 and will close on Wednesday December 22. For further information please contact Sophie Harrison on [email protected] or on 92602479.
