Woman caused £900 damage after reversing into other car

After reversing into a car outside a chip shop and causing £900 damage, a 65-year-old woman drove away.

Ann Finnegan, Kernan Avenue, Portadown, was fined £120 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention.

Fines of £90 each were imposed for failing to remain, failing to stop and failing to report an accident and she received six penalty points.

The court heard that on April 1 police received a complaint about a car being damaged at the Kernan shops. Two staff in a chip shop gave the registration number of a car which had reversed into another car before driving off. The bumper was damaged.

When she was interviewed the defendant denied knowledge of the offences, saying she had been in the area but couldn’t remember hitting the car. A solicitor said she had been driving for 36 years and had never been involved before in any incident. He added that the damage to the injured party’s vehicle would be covered by her insurance and most of the £900 was for labour.

The solicitor said she had gone to the takeaway for food and did not realise she had struck the car so drove on.
