Work to start on improvements at Moira roundabout

The Northern Ireland Executive funded scheme was announced by Transport Minister Michelle McIlveen.

Work on the resurfacing scheme will take place over eight evenings and is expected to be complete in early May - ahead of the Balmoral Show.

The announcement comes after local residents had called for improvements saying that the current condition of the major roundabout could lead to a ‘serious accident’.

One local resident described the roundabout, which leads to the motorway, Belfast International Airport, and Moira itself, as being ‘covered in potholes’.

“The roundabout is in a desperate state, Someone, possibly with children in the car, could come flying around that roundabour and blow a tyre, it could lead to a serious accident,” they said.

Annoucing the improvement scheme, Minister Michelle McIlveen said: “This significant investment will directly benefit the community in the Moira and surrounding areas and will also be welcome news to commuters who use the roundabout on a daily basis.

“Work is scheduled to take place at night to have minimal impact on traffic and will be completed ahead of the Balmoral Show in May.”

Preliminary work is now underway to develop a traffic management programme to keep disruption to a minimum and full details will be announced before the scheme gets underway.
