Club's efforts starting to bear fruit

THE efforts of Clady and District Angling club to enhance the salmon run on the river saw over 60,000 fry placed out in various sections of the head waters of the river in the last couple of weeks. These fry were hatched out in the Bushmill Salmon station hatchery from eggs collected from the brood stock collected at the end of November last year.

The eggs were slower in hatching this year due to the cold winter water temperatures.

These fry are now ready to start feeding naturally in the river and should in two or three years leave the river as smolts to feed in the sea before returning to spawn and hopefully start the cycle over again.

These fry will increase the number of fry already naturally hatched in the river, and were put into areas highlighted by electro fishing as having lower than expected numbers .

The club is once again deeply indebted to the staff of the Bushmills hatchery who have done a great job in rearing these fry over the winter and transporting them back to our feeder streams.

Fishing has improved on the river which has seen some good results in recent competitions, the recent junior competition saw M Henry win with 3 large trout for 6lb. In the full members section the Freddie Thorton cup was won by P Henry with 3 trout for 5lb and the Davy Gordon Cup winner was J Nelson with 3 trout for 4lb10.
