CYCLING: Bann lad Cameron earns a top five finish in the Ras Dhun na nGall

Having been selected to ride for the Cycling Ulster team McIntyre would already start the weekend on a positive note.

In Friday’s opening stage it was Danish International rider Mikkel Frølich Honoré that predictably dominated

Honoré was joined by Simon Tuomey of Cork along with Banbridge and Ulster’s young hope McIntyre, the Dane winning ahead of Tuomey, with McIntyre nine seconds adrift.

McIntyre set the standard in the hill climb TT on Saturday, the first to break the 10 minute marker with 9:52.

It was the Danish powerhouse Honoré however that would set the fastest time – 8:50 and with only Cunningham able to get within 30 seconds of him. McIntyre’s time was enough for a top ten placing and with his previous result left him a very solid sixth on General Classification.

With a solo attack inside the opening 10km of the Saturday afternoon stage it would be over 70km and beyond the finish line before anyone would see him again. Cameron would lead a small chasing group home to take sixth place, also holding that same position on General Classification.

The 100km Sunday stage was about one thing; the final mountain top finish on Glengesh Pass.

Derek Cunningham of Team Bikeworx attacked on the opening climb to open a sizeable lead. His deficit on General Classicisation was 2:06 and he was agonisingly close to becoming the leader on the road. The Dane rallied back though, finishing just 17 seconds behind Cunningham to take overall victory.

Cameron had also produced another great performance, finishing third. It was enough to move the Bann youngster back into the top five on General Classification and the first of his Ulster team.

CURRY TOO HOT TO HANDLE AGAIN IN IRISH POINTS SERIES

Banbridge CC’s off road contingent travelled to Glendalough Estate in Wicklow to compete in the recent Round Three of the Irish National Points Series.

First up in the U14 race were Mark and James Buller. Both rode a strong race with Mark finishing fifth and James eighth.

Next up was John Buller in the U16 race. He rode very well finishing in second.

It was the turn of Gareth McKee, James Curry and Simon Curry’s to go out and try to get a win in the senior races. First off was McKee, who rode a super race finishing second behind the strong multiple National Champion Robin Seymour of the hosts.

National Junior Champion James Curry had another fantastic outing taking another convincing win ahead of David Conroy of DLCO Scott Cycling. Simon Curry had a crash, withdrawing with an injured hip.

A RECORD HAT-TRICK FOR STAR SHENNA

Breaking a national record is always good going but Shenna McKiverigan managed to smash three at the Duane Delaney Track GP on Saturday.

Firstly she recorded a time of 13.70 seconds in the 200m which is an outright Junior record as well as the outdoor record. In the final event, she then recorded a time of 40.43 seconds for the standing start 500m - a new Junior women’s outdoor record. Well done Shenna!
