Liam Martin’s double helped Ballinamallard United pick up full points in a 3-0 victory from Shamrock Park as Portadown’s run of disappointing results continued with a third successive defeat.

The Ports entered the match with Peter McMahon in support of lone striker Gary Twigg, following the unavailability of high-profile strikers Mark McAllister and Darren Murray.

The partnership linked up for the first attempt on target but Twigg’s curling effort off a McMahon pass proved comfortable for goalkeeper Alvin Rouse.

Ballinamallard held the upper hand overall and came close to breaking the deadlock when Adam Lecky’s angled shot inside the packed penalty area was blocked on the line by Sean Mackle.

Ryan Campbell’s cross from the right was then trapped under the feet of Chris Casement inside the box and Michael McCrudden steered a shot goalwards but the defender recovered to divert the attempt past the post.

Portadown’s most promising attack of the first half featured a run from the right wing into the danger zone by teenager Jake Richardson.

Ballinamallard had to wait until the second half for a reward - then enjoyed two goals inside a minute.

Jason McCartney whipped in a teasing cross from the left on 50 minutes and Martin rose to head home before David Miskelly could claim the delivery.

Portadown’s problems increased within moments as Johnny Lafferty’s upfield ball caught the home side on the backfoot and, with everyone in red waiting for an offside flag, Campbell lifted the ball over the exposed Miskelly and headed into the empty net.

Miskelly raced out to prevent the visitors from adding number three off McCrudden.

Ballinamallard increased the lead to 3-0, however, on 83 minutes when pressure resulted in Martin curling home from distance for his second of the afternoon.

Rouse finished his afternoon with a clean sheet thanks to a double save to deny Twigg and Ross Redman in injury-time.
