Cliftonville’s Paddy McLaughlin in player warning

With limited spectators and most clubs unable to accommodate away fans, Premiership players have had to kick off the season without the traditional atmosphere generated by both sets of supporters.

As McLaughlin’s Reds prepare to welcome Carrick to Solitude it is an added aspect to the ‘new normal’ alongside the financial implications.

“I think it will impact on teams all season and many of the advantages clubs previously count on, such as playing at home in front of your own supporters, might not count for much.

“The first goal is always important but may take on even more significance now as, if you concede it’s harder to turn around a game without backing from your own supporters, along with the absence of the normal intensity created by two sets of fans.

“It is another obstacle and may level the playing field for teams in some ways - but it’s another challenge clubs have to face.

“Players feed off the energy of the crowd and many need that adrenaline as motivation but it makes it more important than ever to approach games with your own intensity and focus.”

Carrick Rangers, having met Linfield and Larne to date, now tackle another leading Premiership side with the weekend visit to Solitude.

“Despite disappointment in the result against Larne I could not be more proud of my players’ performance,” said Rangers boss Niall Currie. “We were absolutely magnificent and desperately unlucky to come away with nothing.

“We matched a full-time team in every department so, with the same levels, I’m absolutely sure we can cause Cliftonville problems.

“It’s been a very difficult start with Linfield, Larne and now Cliftonville but I’ve seen massive positives.

“So, hopefully we can rally, go in as usual as underdogs and give a great Cliftonville team a real challenge.

“These games will not define our season but it would be great for confidence to produce another sterling performance as the boys have been fantastic.”
