Olympic come out on top in Cookstown derby

Olympic took on Cookstown RBL last Saturday in the big local derby and came out winners by 4-1 to gain a valuable three points.

Cookstown Olympic found themselves one down from the penalty spot after just 8 minutes with the defence losing possession and the RBL forward getting fouled in the penalty area.

It took Olympic a while to get into their stride but they levelled after 25 minutes as a Mickey Meenan corner was met at the back post by Ryan Bloomer for the finish.

Four minutes later and John Gilmore put James McGahan through with his first shot blocked and the RBL keeper saving the second one. Olympic then went 2-1 up on 42 minutes when Niall Doyle put McGahan away and he finished past the RBL keeper.

In the second half Olympic were slow to get started and after 49 minutes their keeper Donovan McGuckin made a great save when one-on-one against the RBL forward. Olympic then got a bit of pressure going and after 54 minutes got their third as Niall Doyle gathered the ball at the edge of the box and slipped it to Liam Mullan who charged into the box past two defenders and smashed a volley in his stride to the top corner.

The fourth Olympic goal arrived on the 80th minute as Danny McNulty broke down the right side and crossed for Matty Hughes who finished with a first time shot.

This Saturday Olympic will away in the league against Antrim Rovers with a 2pm kick off.

Training will continue at 8.00pm on Thursdays on the synthetic pitch at MUSA.

The Lucky 4 Lottery numbers for Saturday 20th February were 5, 7, 12 and 24. There were no winners who matched four numbers for the £550 jackpot. There were no winners of the £30 prize for 3 numbers. The jackpot will now be raised to £575 for next week’s draw and tickets are available from any committee or team member.

The club are running a Last Man Standing competition which started on Saturday 6th February.
