Portadown thirds progressed past Dungannon Swifts on Saturday in the NIFL League Cup courtesy of a last-minute penalty kick.
A disjointed display at Kernan Playing Fields - against 10-man Swifts for the closing stages - resulted in victory by 3-2 thanks to Josh Norton’s double and a Ryan McKeown finish.
“It was very poor, with little quality in the first half,” said Chris Wright, manager of Portadown thirds. “We came in 2-1 down and the second half was very scrappy, perhaps worse than the first.
“However, a five-minute bright spell resulted in a good goal and we almost got another soon after before the Swifts’ goalkeeper was sent off for handling outside the box.
“In the end, we got a last-minute penalty to move into the next round.”
