Portadown have tonight (Tuesday) signed former Aston Villa winger Josh Barton on a short-term contract.
Barton was released by the Premier League club in June and the Lurgan-born wideman has spent the past few weeks training with the Ports.
Ronnie McFall considers the 19-year-old a player capable of adding an extra dimension to his senior panel.
“Josh has been training with us for a while after leaving Aston Villa,” said the Ports boss. “We are delighted to have him on board on a short-term deal and certainly consider Josh a player for our firsts.
“He can play wide left or right and is very quick.”
Barton featured in last season’s NextGen Series final triumph by Aston Villa - a tournament considered the European Cup at youth level - and has previously lined out for County Armagh in the Milk Cup, plus Northern Ireland at schoolboy level in America.
It marks the second deal in as many weeks by Portadown following the capture of Shane O’Connor.
O’Connor made his debut for the Ports at left-back last weekend in a 5-0 victory over Dungannon Swifts, a welcome Danske Bank Premiership win following back-to-back defeats.
