A statement has been released tonight by Portadown’s Board of Directors to confirm financial restrictions will prevent any January transfer movement.
“The Board of Directors of Portadown Football Club wish to clarify statements issued in the press recently, regarding the lack of signing opportunities in the current transfer window,” reads the article posted on the club website under the heading of ‘Board Statement on January Transfers’. “During the summer of 2014, a number of new high-profile signings were made, with the intention of fielding a team capable of competing for the league title, and securing European qualification.
“These signings brought us up to the maximum allowable spend as outlined in the Salary Cap Protocol.
“Unfortunately, this challenge did not materialise, and as all our senior players are contracted to the end of season 2015/16 or beyond, we are unable to add to the playing panel unless current players are moved on.
“In conjunction with the management team, we felt this was a real opportunity to challenge for major honours, and we are extremely disappointed that it did not happen.
“We will continue to support the club manager whenever possible in the future, to ensure the best possible team is fielded in order to compete for honours; notwithstanding the parameters laid down in the Salary Cap Protocol.”
