Jake Richardson scored two goals in Portadown’s midweek 6-4 defeat by Glenavon during the NIFL Reserve League.

Nedas Maciulaitis and Marcio Soares were also on target.

“You expect something from a match if you score four goals, so it was disappointing to lose,” said Gary Mccullough, manager of the reserves. “Glenavon had Gary Hamilton and other senior players on show so that will add to the learning experience for our players.”

PORTADOWN RESERVES: Conor Larkin, Mark Carson, Adam White, Caolan Skelton, Matthew Parker, Jake Richardson, Pauddy Judge, Bruno Montero, Nedas Maciulaitis, Tiago Ferreira. Subs: Owen McConville, John Gibson, Mark Whitten.

Portadown thirds kicked off life in NIFL Youth League Section A with a visit to defending champions Linfield Rangers.

Linfield recorded a 2-0 victory but manager Chris Wright remains positive despite the result.

“I was out of the country so, first up, my thanks go to my assistant Andrew Topley, plus Peter Mullan and Gary McCullough from the reserves, for handling Saturday,” said Chris Wright, manager of the thirds. “We expected a step-up but everyone will learn from the 2-0 defeat, especially how mistakes in Section A will get punished.

“We conceded in the final moments of the first half and towards the end of the game.

“However, we proved competitive across the match and an injury to Zac Wilson disrupted our positive start.

“One plus this season will be having players line out in midweek for the reserves then take that experience into the group for the thirds on Saturday.

“We have our opening home game now this weekend at Kernan against Ballymena United and it would be great to get a crowd of supporters out to back the players.”

PORTADOWN THIRDS: Conor Larkin, Owen McConville, Adam White, Joel Adams, Mark Johnstone, Luke Wilson, Zac Wilson, Paddy McPartland, Adam Brown, Nedas Maciulaitis, Nathaniel Ferris. Subs: Thomas Aston, Peter Campbell, Tiarnan Judge, Scott Megaw, Max Krustis.

Kick-off tomorrow (Saturday) will be 11 o’clock at Kernan Playing Fields.
