Fourth Years victorious in Norah Sinclair tournament

A squad of thirteen fourth form girls made their way to Cambridge House, Ballymena, for the annual Norah Sinclair Fourth Form Hockey Tournament

Rainey faced back to back games, a real test of fitness levels. The first match saw the Rainey girls take control against host team Cambridge House. Winning 1-0 with Captain Kirsty McLarnon starting off the score sheet.

The next opponents were Coleraine High. Rainey started off well winning a penalty corner and Kirsty again finding the backboard. Great play from Claire Holmes and Sarah Millar in finding the forward line and of Jessica Hyndman, Lauren McGookin and Niamh Scullion. Bursting through the middle lead to Kirsty McLarnon scoring again making it 2-0.

Next Rainey’s arch rivals Ballymena Academy. Knowing this was going to be a tough match the girls really went for goal from the first whistle. Great play from Aimee Stockman, Edele Mallon and Tara Falkingham by not allowing Ballymena time to shoot whilst Rebecca Johnston was called upon in nets to clear any deflections that came her way. The captain leading by example added another goal to her tally! Rainey win 1-0.

The next group match was against Limavady and all Rainey and Lauren McGookin hobbled onto the pitch with a bruised leg but this didn’t stop her putting 2 goals into the net to win the match 2-0.

In the final group match Rainey faced Dalraida. This was going to be tough and the girls new a draw would take them through but they wanted the win. Niamh Scullion finished a lovely goal to win the match 1-0 to put Rainey into the final.

An excellent display in the group stages with all squad members playing their part with Lauren Hilman and Charlotte Bain working very hard when called upon. Rainey were to play Ballymena Academy in the final. We burst out of the blocks and put the Academy under pressure with Diane Forsythe running up the right hand side of the pitch and Kirsty McLarnon and Lauren McGookin making the keeper work. Rainey won a short corner but could not convert. Unfortunately, the result finished 0-0. Both teams where the winners of the Norah Sinclair Tournament receiving a shield and gold medals. We are delighted to have won our last tournament as a team and look back on it with fond memories!
