The Aghadowey Cup (The Claret Jug !) was the Prize for the winner of the weekend competition at the Brown Trout.

Jimmy Kelly (9), recently reported having come out of the wilderness after three barren years, has certainly made up for lost time by following up his win two weeks ago and runner-up last week with another emphatic win by two clear points with a fine score of 41 points.

Just one over par after nine giving him 21 points Jimmy recovered from a poor start to the second nine scoring only a single point at the 10th. and 11th. to add a further 20.

Highlights of Jimmy’s round were birdies at the 4th.& 16th. holes.

Two other players had returns of 39 points each and after the tiebreak. Evan Wilson (19) took second prize by virtue of an excellent back nine of 23 points to add to his front nine 16.

The poor start by failing to score at the opening hole and the third did not deter Evan from just edging Malachy Laverty (15) into third place.

Malachy opened with 18 and added 21 with the help of two birdie twos at holes 4 &18 . Other twos were scored by Jimmy Kelly, Ronnie Milliken and Tommy McGowan.

KILREA MANOR

The competition for the President’s Bowl was played for on the 17/18 August 2013, and the winner was Tony McLernon, with a gross score of 67, net 57.

Runner up was Harry Boyle who had a gross score of 74, net 60.

Third place went to Jeffrey Marks, posting a gross 76, net 42. The back nine prize went to Eddie O’Kane, and the front nine winner was Martin McGrath .

Twos were recorded by Martin McGrath ,Seamus Hasson, and Charlie Hasson..

This year’s charity competition will be played on Sunday 15 September, in aid of Tiny Life.

Many thanks to Kenny’s who will be providing the prizes. Visitors are very welcome and the entry fees are £15 for visitors, and £10 for members. Support from neighbouring club members would be much appreciated.

DAVID IS NET CHAMPION.

Playing off twelve, David Ferguson scored 43 points to win the Net Championship over the Strand Links. He started with a one pointer but this was soon rectified with a good birdie four at the long fourth.

This, combined with a few three point pars saw David hit the turn with 22 points bagged. No birdies but very few dropped shots was the way of his inward nine as 21 further points were reaped to boost the days total to 43.

This proved to be seven better than the rest of the field with David Avery taking second place with 38 points.

His double bogey six at the eighth hole the only blemish in a front nine which gave up 20 points, including a birdy four at the seventh. After sixteen David was just two over par when the double bogeys returned to see a single point scored at each of the final two holes restricting the points haul to 18.

This gave David his 38 total for second spot. Stephen Garrett bogied the par three third and the long par four fifth before hitting a birdy three at eight on his way to winning the Best Gross prize. He was out in 37, one over par, but a double bogey six at ten damaged that good work. Another shot was lost at eleven before Stephen hit the birdy trail with two fours on the par fives and a wee two at fifteen got him back to level par for the inward nine. Two fours to finish and Stephen signed for his one over par 73.

The low Section was topped by Adrian McNeice with 37 points from his eight handicap.

A blank at the short sixth curtailed Adrian’s scoring for the opening nine to 18 but a points blitz came with a two at fifteen followed by three par fours, all with shots, to take 12 points from the final four boosting the back nine score to 22 and giving him 37 overall. Andrew Stanton took the High Section prize with 35 points.

A blank at the opening hole wasn’t the best of starts but Andrew recovered well to register 19 for the nine. Another blank dropped in at the twelfth but was made up for by a few pars to allow Andrew to take 16 coming back for his 35 total

HOSPICE AIDED AT

CASTLEROCK

On Sunday Castlerock Golf Club ran the Hospice Open. Mark Creighton was the table topper with 40 points being scored from his 21 handicap. He was held to 17 points for the opening nine, two blanks being the problem, but he warmed to his task coming back.

He played to his handicap for six holes of the back nine before hitting a birdie two for four points at sixteen, a par five for three at seventeen and finished the day with a birdyiethree at eighteen for another four! This gave Mark 23 back and 40 overall.

David Ussher was the man who was pipped at the post by this flurry of points as the fifteen handicapper had scored 39 points. He did it the other way round by scoring 23 out. His first dropped shot, a four at the fourth, was immediately followed by a birdie four at the Railway hole for four points. David’s bogey four at nine gave him just one point but you can’t be displeased with 23 points for nine.

Things got a bit ragged on the inward nine as several single pointers appeared and the telling point came with a blank at the short sixteenth. Sixteen points for the nine and 39 overall meant second place for David.

Robert Ramsey took third place with 38 points. A steady front nine of 20 points included a no score at nine for the fifteen handicapper. His back nine had a couple of one pointers which meant just 18 could be added and third place was taken with the 38 points scored.

The Best Visitor prize went to Ben Kirkwood (9) for his 33 points.

MONTHLY WIN FOR PAUL

Paul Rohdich returned a score of 40 points on Saturday and won the Monthly Stableford at Royal Portrush.

His level par front nine included a birdie four at the ninth to even out the bogey five at four and gave him 21 points out.

He had carded three bogies when he finished sixteen but lobbed in two fine birdies with a four and a three to end the back nine with another nineteen points which took Paul to 40, two clear of the field.

Silver topper was David Clarke with 38 points from his handicap of eight. David had two fours at the par fives with a run of five bogies in between which gave him 19 points for the nine.

The seventeenth was David’s nemisis as it gave him nothing, this was unfortunate as he had dropped just one shot on the return nine till then. A final par at eighteen left David with another 19 points and the Silver with his total of 38. The Man of bronze was John McCarter with 34 from his eighteen handicap. He had 18 points out and was going along nicely until sixteen caused a stumble and gave up nothing. This restricted the back nine score to 16 points and the overall to 34.

Best Gross of the day came from Anthony Murphy for his round of 73. Anthony was out in one under par with birdy fours at two and nine and threes at five and seven. Six pars and three bogies was the story of the back nine and added 39 shots for a total of 73

PORTER CARRIES OFF DOWDS CUP.

Rathmore Golf Club’s Dowds Cup was won by Andrew Porter after he scored a net 70 on Sunday. This, together with the same score from last week, gave the five handicapper an aggregate of 140.

His steady four over front nine on Sunday was followed up with an eagle three at the long tenth and, although no more sub par scores were logged, Andrew dropped just three shots on his way in for a one over par 36. His gross of 75 nets down to 70 which placed him third for the day but top overall.

On the day it was Evan Wall who topped the chart with his net 69. The nine handicapper went out in three over par 38, including a birdie four at the long fourth, and returned with another 40 giving a gross 78 which netted down to the winning 69.

Jordon Dunlop scored another 69 but was on the wrong side of the countback system which eased him into second place.

The fourteen handicapper was out in four over par but a pair of sevens late in the round scuppered his chances. Fourth place went to Ryan Cunningham for his net 71. The four man birdied three of the par fives for his gross 75, net 71.

Rodney Magee was a welcome sight in the Clubhouse again as he logged his second ever hole-in-one.

Meanwhile, Ben Best had a round of 74 to seal his win in the Scratch Cup with an aggregate of 144.

An eagle three at the long fourth was cancelled out by a nasty six at the par four eighth to see Ben out in 38 shots, three over par.

Thirteen gave up a birdy four and with just two shots lost later Ben had signed for a round 74.
