Berryman extends lead in Golfer of the Year race

Roe Park continued to see huge numbers of golfers flock to the resort last week taking advantage of the fantastic course conditions and many competitions on offer.

The Club Stableford on Thursday was a chance for Kieran Berryman to extend his lead further at the top of the Golfer of the Year table and he did just that, taking victory with an excellent score of 41 points.

His round of 67 included an amazing sequence of scores at holes 14, 15 and 16, going birdie, eagle, birdie, to set up the win.

Left hander Johnathan Forsythe recaptured some welcome form as he sealed the runner-up spot scoring 40 points and Jamie Vinnicombe finished third with 39 points.

Saturday saw both a Club Stableford sponsored by Cheers Off Sales and Dungiven Celtic GAA holding their annual club fundraiser.

The Club Stableford was won by Joe O’Kane who has also found some welcome form with a fine score of 41 points.

Martin Rafferty scored 40 points to take second place and Declan McGrotty took third place with 38 points. That man Kieran Berryman had another good day winning the gross prize with 36.

The Golfer of the Year competition sponsored by Resident Head PGA Professional Michael McCrudden has now passed the halfway point with Kieran Berryman sitting in first place on a fantastic 83 points.

Now playing of a 1 handicap for the first time he has a commanding lead of 23 points over the rest of the field. His nearest challenger is Andy Young who occupies second place on 60 points.

Young Jamie Cochrane has plenty to brag about as he sits in third on 50 points, 11 points clear of his dad Ricky in sixth place on 39 points. Bryan Donaghy sits in fourth place on 48 and Alan Dallas is in fifth place on 41 points.

Up next are Club Stableford competitions on Thursday and Sunday with a Monthly Medal on Saturday sponsored by SJ Mitchell & Co.

Meanwhile Buncrana Golf Club member Patsy Gillespie (53) and North-West’s Marty McGrellis (48), from Feeny, are the latest players to have gained exclusive membership of the BOSS Watches H1Club.

Both players recorded a “hole in one” on their home courses recently and both will receive a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece, to mark their achievement.

Patsy holed out on the 159 yards par three 2nd at “The Lowers” the 20 handicapper predictably delighted with his achievement.

And just up the road at the Lisfannon club, Marty recorded his “ace” on the 90-yard, par-three 16th - “The Fairy” - the 11-handicapper having already celebrated victory in the gents’ section of the prestigious Maire Nangle Memorial Trophy.
