Ian leads the way in Sweep

MEMBERS participating in last week’s Wednesday Sweep at Lurgan enjoyed some pleasant winter sunshine.

The competition was played over the same 14 holes as used in the bigger winter league competition. This will be the ruling for the foreseeable future. Some 16 golfers achieved under pars returns for the regulation fourteen holes. Holes four, seven, thirteen and sixteen were out of circulation.

The competition was won by a six under par total of 34 points. However two golfers managed this figure and the issued was only sorted out on the back six. In the end Ian Harrison was declared the winner of this midweek sweep. This 15 handicapper is never far away from his handicap and this win was no major surprise. On the outward seven holes par figures at holes one, five and eight provided a solid base. On the final seven holes his play was much more successful. Prime examples were birdies on holes twelve and eighteen. Pars at holes ten and seventeen were further indicators of his consistent play.

Runner-up with an equally pleasing return of 34 points was Norris Thompson. This long time member kept mistakes to a minimum and thus his score kept moving in the right direction. On the day par figures at holes six, nine, ten, eleven and fourteen paved the way for this quality bout of scoring by this twenty one handicapper.

Regular Wednesday golfer Matt Connolly claimed the third net prize with an useful tally of 33 points. Playing off a twelve handicap Matt was quickly into the fray with a birdie at the second. Pars at the fifth and ninth added to the gathering of points. A run of par, par, birdie got the back seven journey well under way. He rounded off his day with a brace of pars on the closing two holes.

A gross score of 26 points helped Andy Wilson with that category prize. This eight handicapper had a surprising no-return at the second but he made amends with pars on the other six holes. He covered the inner seven in level par. He balanced birdies at holes ten and eighteen with bogeys on the eleventh and fifteenth holes. Pars were his lot on the rest of the holes.

The other hot scoring was achieved by the following players:
