McGrane wins at Pro-Am

EURO Tour player Damien McGrane flies off to Austria this morning after a fruitful weekend in the Billy Henderson Properties PGA pro-am at City of Derry.

The Meath man made use of his free time from the European Tour to win the 36-holes event, at Prehen.

McGrane, who also played in the Newbridge Silverware PGA pro-am at The Curragh, where he came joint fifth last Thursday, topped the leaderboard last night (Sunday) at City of Derry on five-under-par 137 with four strokes to spare over second-place John Kelly (St Margaret’s).

The winner did all the hard work in the opening round on Saturday, after which he posted a five-under-66 before handing in a regulation 71 from the closing round.

A bogey five at the first hole was followed by birdie three at the sixth and a two at the short eighth to turn in one-under-35. He then pencilled in eight pars and bogey five at the 14th hole on the homeward trip.

Barrie Trainor led after the first round with a super six-under-par 65 but the Mayobridge attaché collapsed in the second session as he carded an 81 to slip to joint sixth place.
