Red-letter day for Black at the ’Blacker

Craig Black, a category one golfer, posted the best score of the season at Carrickblacker on Saturday with his one-under-par round of 69.

Stableford success arrived off his five handicap boosted by birdies at the fifth, seventh and 12th holes.

Bogey scores on the final two holes left Black with 69 gross for 42 points and a two-shot success.

Derek McCoy was next in line on 40 points alongside John Cassidy and Jack Johnston.

Martin Rowland finished third with 39 points and Eric McAfee wrapped up the top-six positions on the same tally.

Stephen Poole was the pick of the gross players on 71, courtesy of the nine-hole countback.

Mervyn Adamson added another impressive result with 41 points towards Kilpatrick Cup success in the Monday Seniors.

Adamson finished first over Derek McCoy’s 40 points.

Bertie Speers posted 38 points and Ronnie Hynds came home third on 37.

In the Thursday Stableford, Andy Gribben and Mervyn Adamson each registered 40 points - with Brian Valley next in line thanks to 38 and Andrew Fitzsimmons the leading gross player on 74.

Entry sheets have been posted in the Pro Shop for the Scratch, Fairline, Fourball, Foursomes and Mixed matchplay competitions ahead of the deadline at the end of April.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will mark the first 28-hole stroke of the year with the PGA Pro-Am qualifier. Starting times from the Pro Shop.

Jean Barr posted 72 to top the ladies’ Montgomery Rosebowl qualifying.

June Garvin finished second ahead of Wendy Beale.

Liz Wilson won the nine-hole competition.

The next event on the ladies’ calendar is the Calvin Bowl across the 18-hole stableford format.
