Smyth is runaway Open Stroke event winner

Low handicap winners were Jim McIlwaine (nett 66), Tommy Knocker (nett 67), Brett McCrum (nett 67), Trevor Nutt (nett 68, and Jim Fittis (nett 69).

High handicap winners were Colin Murphy (nett 66), Alan Davidson (nett 67), Stephen Marshall (net 68), Alan Adair (nett 68) and Mervyn Kane (nett 69). Graeme Arthur won the Gross Prize with a score of 71.

Sunday’s Open Greensomes, sponsored by Fergusson Coal, was won by Brian Forsythe and Helen Vizard with a score of 62. They were followed by George and Linda Armstrong (nett 66.8), Lindsay McBride and Barbara Ann Wilson (nett 70.2) Richard and Helen Pedlow (nett 70.4) and Gary and Lily Robinson (nett 72.6). The Gross Prize was won by Ross Jamison and Joan Rea with a score of 78.

Open Week: Men’s Seniors: The overall winner was J. Lecky (38 points). Section winners were L. Bride (34 points) and Jim Livingstone (34 points).

The Open 4 Ball Betterball was won by Bill Thompson and Bill Milligan (Nett 61).

Adrienne Baker’s 36 points was enough for her to win the Ladies’ Open Stableford. She was followed by Helen Vizard (31 points), Catherine Steele (30 points), Janet Robinson, Rebecca MacLoed and Sandra McNeilly (all 29 points). Anja McIlwrath won the Gross Prize and the 9-holes prize-winners were M. Marquess and J. McKenna, both from Fortwilliam.

The Men’s Open Stableford was won by Ross Jamison who posted 40 points. The low handicap winner was Duncan MacLoed with 39 points. Arthur Stewart and Brian Walsh (both 37 points) were joint-winners in the high handicap section.

The Gents’ Scramble winners were E. Braniff and G. Culbert, while the ladies’ winners were Jan Davill and Kelly Campbell.

Open Week organiser Isaac Jardine was very appreciative of the generosity of the sponsors, members and visitors who played and the hard work of Leslie Lyle and James Orchin who ensured the event was, again, a highlight in the club’s activities.

Whitehead Golf Club: Alice Hartford and Lorraine Arbuckle carded 34 points to win Nellie Garrett Foursomes on Thursday. The pair qualify for the finals at Knock Golf Club in September.
