Success for Kieran in monthly medal

Again, a good score was difficult to attain and indeed only 15 golfers from a field of 230 managed under par returns. This was equivalent to about seven per cent of the field.

The clear winner of the June Medal was Kieran Magee. This six handicapper had a wonderful net 64 in the testing conditions.

Birdies at holes four and seven and par figures at holes one, five and eight were his promising early figures. On the inward nine he achieved further birdies on holes 10, 11 and 18.

Pars at holes 12, 14 and 16 complemented these birdies. A double bogey on the seventeenth was the only blip on this exceptional card.

In the final analysis he found himself just one stroke ahead of his closest pursuer.

Runner-up, with a hard fought total of net 65, was Graham McNeill. This 24 handicapper recorded valiant par figures at holes four, 13, 15 and 18.

A trio of double bogeys at holes two, six and 12 were his only wayward efforts. With numerous net pars on his card he eased himself into second spot. Perhaps his visit to the Callaway Demo on Friday evening was a bonus.

The third net prize went to Michael McMahon with an equally pleasing return of net 65. This 16 handicapper played quite solidly over the respective nines to post this tidy score.

He began his day with a par but triple and double bogeys followed on the next two holes. He bounced back to make par figures on the next six holes.

Another fine run of pars came his way starting on the tenth and ending on the fourteenth. A birdie at the fifteenth and a par at hole seventeen were the climax of this winning card.

A gross 71 helped young Jamie McConville to the gross award. This five handicap golfer had a mixed bag of scores over the opening nine.

Bogeys were recorded at holes one, five, seven and nine. He restored some of the deficit with birdies on holes three, four and eight.

Jamie played the back nine in level par. It comprised seven pars, a bogey at the fifteenth and a birdie on the final hole of play.

In the Low Section Brian Clarke took the honours with a well crafted tally of net 66. This 10 handicapper was through nine with six pars and three bogeys on his card.

The offending holes were two, six and eight. Further pars came his way on holes 10 and 12. He had a double bogey on the fourteenth but stormed back with a birdie on the next hole. His round concluded with a trio of pars on the closing holes.

In the Middle section newcomer Michael Curran emerged victorious with a net 68. This 16 handicapper had a steady front nine with pars at holes one, two, five and six.

On the homeward journey pars at holes 13, 17 and 18 were his more memorable moments. In terms of a higher placing, a double bogey at the fourth and a triple bogey on the eighth proved costly.

The High Section prize went to Nigel Girvan. This 21 handicapper claimed the spoils with a net 69. He had his usual streaks of reliable and wayward golf.

Pars were secured on holes one, four and eight. However a triple bogey on the third and a double bogey on the seventh did not do him any favours.

On the inward nine he had pars at holes 13 and 18 but fell foul of double bogeys on holes 11 and 15. Still he had done enough to win the category prize.
